Interactive blogs and eBooks

Neil Gaiman wrote a really interesting blog on the process of getting his book American Gods published. It was so popular that the blog was actually the main component of his book Adventures in the Dream Trade, which is where I first read it. He was basically talking about, ok the book's written, what happens now before it ends up in a bookshop and it was pretty fascinating!

I was thinking that blogs could be used to show people, staff and the public, all kinds of behind-the-scenes stuff and give them an insight into what goes on to actually get various library things up and running. Also it might give them a chance to comment or make suggestions.

The American Gods blog still exists on Neil Gaiman's site, which is well worth a look, and in checking that it was still there I discovered that to celebrate the 7th birthday of the blog a poll was held to find out which of his books should be posted online. Now you can read American Gods free on the web, how's that for the power of the blog!

Also, Neil Gaiman has a sock monkey which you can view in Sock Monkeys: 200 out of 1,863. :)

Science Fiction Double Feature

Ok - for someone who was reluctant to start blogging, what makes a blogger convert? Having a look at what everyone else is doing and finding out, through reading a colleague's blog, that they watch the same comparatively old, esoteric sci-fi shows I do! If you recognise the names Avon and Servalan...well, then you are probably just as tragic as me, and you found it out through Blogger...making the world a smaller, nerdier place :)

Also, after reading the ACT blog that was on the week 2 homework, if I was creating a list of the oddest ("best" in my opinion) book titles then "Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse" would be right up there, didn't quite live up to its promise, but kudos for the title.

Learning to blog

I've read them, but I've never tried it, which I guess is the whole point about 2.0, having a go at new stuff. I really like the idea of life-long learning but will need to work on the discipline of doing a little often, I'm already starting off weeks after I meant to!

Loved some of the blogs that were suggested reading, it would be an excellent way to promote library programs to the public or training and notes/sites of interest to staff; which my library is already doing.

Why sock monkeys? Because they are strange and cute and made of socks, also I couldn't think of anything else :)

And because I love to talk about what I'm reading...

I just read three books by Margaret Atwood in a row, the first time I ever read her work. I really enjoyed them, but I think I'm suffocating in the post-apocalyptic blues and so far all her female characters are victims!
